Saving a recipe video is easy. The harder part starts in the shop, when you are trying to remember whether the creator said two cloves or two teaspoons, and whether the ingredient list was complete.
A useful saved recipe should answer three questions before you buy anything: what exactly is in the source, which quantities and steps remain uncertain, and what do you actually need to buy? You can use this checklist with any notes app. Potom is one way to keep the source and the working card together.
1. Check the source before trusting the card
Open the original post or video. Make sure the link still works and that the caption, ingredients, and steps are available. A private account, deleted post, login wall, missing caption, or unclear audio can leave a saved card with less information than expected.
On Android, you can share a public link from the app that contains it. Sharing a URL passes its address; it does not necessarily pass the video itself. Android's sharing documentation distinguishes text from file transfers. A completed Potom recipe card keeps a source link you can return to while checking the result.

Do not treat a neat card as proof that the original recipe was complete. Check serving size, temperature, timing, and anything mentioned only verbally. Resolve differences between the original and the extracted text before using the quantities.
2. Check quantities and steps separately
Ingredients and instructions answer different questions. An ingredient list may say that oil is needed, while the steps reveal when it is added. A video may show preparation that is absent from the caption. Review both sections before creating a shopping list.
Use a short review pass:
- Confirm servings before scaling quantities.
- Mark quantities spoken quickly or shown only on screen.
- Check units, temperatures, and timings against the source.
- Separate essentials from optional garnish.
- Write down substitutions you actually intend to use.
Our prepared test recipe contains four peppers, two tablespoons of oil, two cloves of garlic, and salt and pepper. In this component test, the card separates ingredients from steps and offers the shopping action. In a second scenario, we supplied neither ingredients nor steps to check how the card handles incomplete data.

These two test cases cover different situations. A missing cover can leave a useful text recipe; missing ingredients leave you without a usable shopping list. Check the original link rather than inventing ingredients. If the source is unavailable too, keep its address in your notes and return later instead of shopping from a guess.
3. Build the shopping list from what is missing
The shopping list is personal. It should contain what you still need, not every ingredient named by the creator. Before adding an item, check your cupboards and decide whether you will use the stated quantity or a substitution.
For example, a recipe can mention oil, garlic, and peppers while you already have oil at home. Your list then needs the missing items only. Keep the original quantities beside the list until you have checked servings. A shopping list is an action list; it does not replace the source or cooking instructions.
Potom provides an “Add to shopping list” action when a card contains ingredients. Review the destination list as a separate step: remove what you already have, check quantities and keep the source handy for anything unclear. The check used prepared component data, not extraction from a live video or a complete shopping trip.
A short routine before shopping
Open the source. Read the ingredients once. Read the steps once. Mark unclear quantities. Check what you already have. Only then create the shopping list.
You can do the same with a normal note and a handwritten shopping list. The useful habit is to keep the recipe, your quantities and what is already at home distinct, instead of treating every saved ingredient as a purchase.
