A bookmark remembers an address

A regular bookmark is excellent when the URL and page title are enough. It is fast, durable, easy to export, and does not need an AI system to explain what you already understand.

The problem appears when a title says little, the source is a video or social post, and you return with only a vague memory of why it mattered.

An AI-assisted card tries to keep the reason

What can go wrong?Broken link or poor filingBroken source plus incomplete or incorrect analysis
Privacy boundaryCan remain local or browser-syncedDepends on what is sent for processing and what stays on-device

AI is useful only when the extra context saves more work than it creates. The result must remain editable and linked to the source.

Use the simplest tool that solves the return

  • Use browser bookmarks for stable reference pages you recognize immediately.
  • Use a read-later tool when clean reading and a review queue are the main job.
  • Use an archive when preserving page snapshots matters.
  • Use an AI-assisted library when mixed content and fuzzy recall are the recurring problem.

These tools can coexist. The mistake is sending everything everywhere and creating four incomplete libraries.

Test retrieval, not the demo

  1. Save five ordinary items from different Android apps.
  2. Wait several days.
  3. Search with a detail that is absent from the title.
  4. Open the source and verify the result.
  5. Delete or export an item to understand control.

A polished summary on the day of capture proves very little. The real test is whether the system gives the right source back after the original context has faded.

How Potom approaches the category

Potom receives items through Android Share. When a public source is readable, it prepares an editable card and can later search the library by words or meaning. Ask Memory answers from saved material and should expose the supporting items.

Private, removed, login-protected, region-limited, or blocked sources may remain incomplete. Protected documents use a separate encrypted on-device area. Potom is not the right choice when you need iOS, desktop-first capture, or a self-hosted web archive.

The useful distinction

A normal bookmark answers: where was the page? A good AI-assisted card tries to answer: what was useful here, and how can I get back to it?

If the second question never appears in your life, keep the simpler bookmark. If it appears every week, test a richer workflow with your own material rather than trusting a category label.

Test your own use case

In Potom, the useful result depends on the material: a film title, separate products from a review, or recipe ingredients and steps. Selected finds from a collection can become individual cards. Try one review, one article and one recipe before moving your whole library. Check whether the cards help you take the next step and reopen the source days later.

Questions & answers

Are AI bookmarks better than normal bookmarks?

Not universally. They help when context and fuzzy retrieval matter. Regular bookmarks remain simpler, portable, and sufficient for recognizable pages.

Can AI understand every saved page?

No. The source must provide readable information, and the analysis can still be incomplete or wrong.

Should the original link remain available?

Yes. The summary is a route back to the source, not a replacement for it.
